Second only to breathable air, a safe source of drinking water is the most crucial thing to have on hand in the likely event of an emergency or disaster. Food would naturally rank second on the list of necessities in a disaster or emergency caused by either nature or humans. Water always disappears first. Along with the utilities for the electricity and gas, water is also cut off, not just from the shelves in the grocery stores and convenience stores. What are your plans if the water in your tap stops flowing and you can’t locate any in the stores? Neighbors will deplete resources like swimming pools, spas, and water features during a prolonged crisis that lasts weeks or even months. To access it, they will undoubtedly be tearing down property fences and gates, carting away buckets at a time, and draining it in days. What’s next?


Curfews and martial law will eventually be implemented as a result of widespread riots and looting that begin in the city and gradually spread to the suburbs and rural areas. Starting at gunpoint, gangs and tiny roaming bands of thugs will start stealing anything they need or want. It doesn’t take long to realize that you should have made plans for this kind of situation.


My goal in producing this post is to alert and caution you about the necessity for everyone to store up on supplies of food, water, and protection if they want to survive a severe crisis or disaster. Protection? How do I put this? I’ll say it like it is: only those who have planned will survive. Are you a militant Christian or a pacifist? Are you prepared to watch as a female relative of yours is raped and killed? Get a gun and get proficient with it! After that, let’s continue.


You must quicky flee if your neighborhood is on fire and engulfed in flames. Do you have a bug-out strategy in place, or are you just going to drive to the nearest traffic jam? What about a camp stove, a supply of rice and beans, and cooking utensils? Water? Water weighs six pounds per gallon, which is the maximum amount you can carry. What you need is a method for heating any dirty water supply to purify it. Why can’t I simply use a filter? If you had done your research in advance, you would be aware that the American Red Cross, FEMA, Homeland Security, and the CDC all highly advise against using any kind of filter during a catastrophe or disaster and recommend a non-electric water distiller. Why not use an electrical distiller? The first is that you probably won’t have electricity. Second, they advise boiling water to destroy pathogenic bacteria, viruses, cysts, and diseases that are transmitted by water. Distillers actually do that! Additionally, all non-electric distillers can use any heat source, including a campfire, an electric or gas stove, a propane stove, a barbecue grill, charcoal, or a propane stove. Only four or five non-electric surviving stills are still in existence.

The following are eight characteristics of a non-electric surviving still

1. Calculate how much water it will filter each day. The non-electric water distillers that are currently available may produce between 8 and 18 gallons of distilled water per day. (Be careful to choose a model that will meet the needs of your family.)

2. Decide on a survivor still based on the stainless steel boiling pot’s gauge and the one with the most durable build and robust materials and components. Particularly considering that the functionality of it will determine whether you and your family survive even the most trying circumstances.

3. The majority of non-electric distillers provide a serious scorching risk that can result in burns of the third degree. Both a toddler and an adult are capable of pulling the boiling pot swiftly upon themselves. A life-threatening injury during a disaster when hospitals might not be reachable for burn treatments is the last thing you need. Choose a surviving still with a condenser cooling system, a boiler that is securely fastened to the condenser to prevent accidental burns, and condenser water that is always at room temperature to further prevent scalding incidents.

4. Select an automated survivor still so that you won’t have to manually fill the boiler with water or periodically refill the condenser water as needed with some devices. Handling the condenser and boiling pot is difficult and dangerous labor. The majority of types need the condenser water to be drained and replaced with cooler water for the still to operate, and if it isn’t changed frequently, it can get hot enough to burn skin to the third degree in just two seconds at temperatures between 140 and 150 F. In order to keep the condenser cool at all times, whether it’s raining, shining, day, or night, one survival still model employs a 9-volt pump 5-watt solar panel with battery backup. It also uses an automatic water addition system to supply water to the boiling pot when it’s needed.

5. Select a survivor that does not require a level operating surface, as some models do. If you need to use a campfire for heat when outdoor camping, you cannot worry about if the survivor is still absolutely level as some companies demand.

6. Some models lack a closed system to stop airborne contaminants or fire debris from entering the system. Select a survivor still that has been entirely sealed off from the boiler through the post filter and cooling coils to the collection container. You won’t ever have to be concerned that the distillation process will taint the water.

7. If you need to bug out quickly, pick a survivor still that can be readily packed up and moved. A large boiling and condenser pot is not something you want to be carrying about, especially if you’re walking.

8. Using a stainless steel cooling coil within a condenser full of cool water, the most distilled water is generated. Avoid models that condense the steam at the bottom of chilly water pots for this reason. With this technique, the steam can become contaminated by the air and the pot’s bottom. Choose a model with a cooling coil hanging in a condenser of cool water so that the steam it contains is shielded from contamination from the outside. Additionally, this process yields three times as much distilled water. The higher price of a non-electric survivor with a stainless steel cooling coil and automatic features can be attributed to that feature. The superior automatic model, the large volume of pure water, the simplicity of unattended operation, and the assurance that it cannot scald anyone make up for the higher cost. The 7-gallon bucket that stores all the parts and includes a handle for convenient transport also comes with this model.

Whichever model or brand you decide on, you can rest assured that no matter the water source, you will be able to transform it into safe, clean drinking water in the event of an emergency or tragedy.
