Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is located just outside the city of Fredericksburg in central Texas. The park derives its name from its focal point; a billion-year-old granite dome that bulges conspicuously out of the surrounding landscape.

Topping out at 1,825 feet above sea level, the pink-hued Enchanted Rock makes for a fantastic amenity for hikers and climbers alike. All in all, this impressive geological feature, together with neighboring subsidiary domes, is crisscrossed by 11 miles of hiking trails.

Climbers, meanwhile, are equally well catered for. The dome’s steeper slopes are lined with enough pitches to keep even Chris Sharma busy. It’s worth noting, however, that climbers are required to sign a release waiver before hitting the dome’s walls.

Rest assured, though, it’s not all about getting a sweat on. The park’s unimpeachably dark skies make it a firm favorite among amateur astronomers. Nature lovers, meanwhile, are drawn to the area by the rich diversity of wildlife on hand. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is open from 6.30 am to 10 pm. The admission fee for adults stands at $8. Children under the age of 12, meanwhile, go for free.
